Trip planning: What to bring

Manifest
On the day of your scheduled trip, please bring a printed passenger list with the first and last names of all students, teachers, and chaperones. This is required for safety and program records.

Sunscreen
Sunscreen is essential—even on cloudy days! Please apply it before your program begins.

Food & Water
Ensure students are well-fed and hydrated before arrival. Our program runs for three hours with no scheduled snack or lunch break. If you plan to eat nearby after your trip, there are several picnic-friendly spots around the Santa Cruz Harbor, including Twin Lakes Beach and public benches outside Java Junction, El Palomar, and the Crow’s Nest Beach Market. Please avoid seating areas reserved for restaurant patrons.

Clothing
Dress in layers and come prepared for variable weather conditions. It can be chilly out on the ocean—even on sunny days. We recommend bringing a warm jacket, hat, and sunglasses (with a strap). Lifejackets will be provided and are required for all students while aboard the boat.

Shoes
Students and adults must wear soft-soled, non-skid, closed-toe shoes. Sneakers are ideal. Please avoid sandals, flip-flops, high heels, dress shoes, or any shoes with slippery soles.

Backpacks & Personal Items
Students may bring backpacks, which will be stored either in our Education Center or left on the bus during the program. To avoid distractions and prevent items from being lost overboard, we ask that phones, cameras, and other loose belongings remain inside backpacks throughout the trip. OSO staff will capture photos during the sail and provide printed copies for students upon departure.
