Secchi disc
We use the secchi disc to measure visibility as well
as seawater color. |
 |
Plankton net
The plankton net is used in the marine biology station
to collect the plankton sample that is viewed in the
Education Center. |
 |
Collection jars
The collection jars are used to transport the plankton
sample from the boat to the Education Center to be examined
under the microscope.

 |
Microscope
Our microscope allows students to see just how much
plankton can live in one drop of water. The microscope
is connected to a large monitor in order for the class
to view and discuss the sample together. |
 |
Dissecting microscope
This microscope uses less magnification and a wider-angle
lens. This allows us to examine details of larger animals
and plants. The dissecting microscope is also connected
to the monitor. |
 |
Plankton checklist
This visual aid consists of an illustrative list of
plankton commonly found in the samples we take from
the boat. The students use this checklist to identify
organisms in their plankton sample. |

Salinity refractometer
This instrument determines salinity by measuring how
light is refracted through a drop of water. |
